Here are some frequently asked questions and their answers.
League Bowling Questions
Q. Do you have league bowling?
A. Yes we do, we have leagues on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. All of our leagues are fun-based, some are more competitive than others. Give us a call at 488-0000, and we will get you set up in the right league for you and your friends.
Q. How long do Leagues run for?
A. Most leagues at Academy Lanes run from early September to mid April. We also have leagues that are shorter in duration, running from October to December, and then again from February to April.
Q. Can I join a league any time?
A. Yes you can. Even though all our leagues have started, we are always accepting new league members. Give us a call at 488-0000 and we will go over all the details with you to get you into a league on the day you want.
Q. What if I am not good enough to join a league?
A. Trust me, you are good enough to join a league. We even have leagues that give out weekly prizes for "achievements" such as lowest games and most gutter balls. Come on out, it's a blast!
Public Bowling Questions
Q. How many people can bowl on one lane?
A. For most parties, we suggest a maximum of 5 to 6 people per lane. Sometimes due to limited availability we allow 7 or 8 people on one lane.
Q. Do you have smaller bowling balls for young children?
A. Believe it or not, all our bowling balls are the same size. We are a 5 Pin Bowling center, so our bowling balls are small enough for a 3 year old to handle.
Q. Are you wheelchair accessible?
A. Yes we are, we have ramps leading down to the lanes on our main floor, and elevator access to our second floor.
Q. What is your biggest or smallest shoe size?
A. Our largest shoes are size 16, and our smallest is a toddlers size 8. If we do not have shoes to fit you or your child, you can bowl in a clean, dry pair of street shoes or socks. Your bowling shoe size should be about the same as your street shoe size.
Q. Do you sell socks?
A. Yes we do sell socks. We suggest that everyone wears socks in the bowling shoes.
Q. Do you have Bingo Bowling?
A. Yes we do, actually when you pay per hour for your lane, you have a few options.
You can play BINGO, a Novelty Game, Interactive Games (at a slightly higher cost) or just a regular game.
BINGO bowling is a game where we give you a BINGO card filled with bowling scores, and you try to fill in the whole card.
A Novelty Game is just a regular game of bowling, but we give you some silly instructions to follow for each frame of that game.
Interactive games is a relatively new set of Games, they are a great alternative to BINGO bowling.
Q. How many lanes does Academy Lanes have?
A. Academy Lanes has 30 lanes of 5 pin bowling.
Q. Do you have Bumper Bowling?
A. Bumper Bowling is available on all 30 of our lanes at any time and for no extra cost.
Q. Can I get my score printed?
A. We can print your scores any time during your visit at no charge.
Q. Do you give lessons?
A. If you are looking for some tips, feel free to ask our staff. We could always arrange a private lesson with one of our top bowlers for you.
Q. How long does it take to play one game?
A. One game for one person will take about 7 and a half minutes on average. With small children you can expect it to take a bit longer.
Bingo Bowling takes quite a bit longer per game. One game of Bingo will take your group anywhere from 20 ot 45 minutes.
Q. Can we drink and eat at the lanes?
A. Each lane has a table and chairs. We encourage you to have a drink and a bite to eat on your lanes. We do not allow food or beverage on the actual bowling lanes.
Q. Can I buy drink tickets for the members of my group?
A. Yes you can. We will check with you to find out what you would like your group to be able to purchase with the tickets.
Q. Can I book a private party?
A. You can book a private party. If availability allows, you could reserve exclusive use of a whole floor in our center. One floor has 14 lanes (capacity of 84 people) and one has 16 lanes (capacity of 96 people)
Q. Do you have an ATM?
A. Yes we have an ATM.
Q. What forms of payment do you accept?
A. We accept cash, Visa, Mastercard, Interac, American Express, and for corporate parties we can also invoice you.
Q. Do you have 10 Pin Bowling?
A. We do not have 10 Pin Bowling, we are a 5 Pin Bowling center.
Q. Do you have a Parking Lot?
A. We do have a parking lot. Our parking lot is on the West side of the building. The spots marked "Reserved 24 Hours for Academy Lanes" are for our customers to park in any time.
Q. Do you have Glow Bowling?
A. Yes we do have Glow Bowling, actually Academy Lanes was the first bowling center in Winnipeg to have glow bowling. Glow bowling is available all the time. Please call ahead for reservations or try booking online.
Q. Do I need to book lanes for my party, or can I just walk in?
A. To guarantee that you get the date and time you would like, we suggest you always book lanes. During our busy season we can be booked full 4 to 6 weeks in advance.
Q. Can I bring in my own food or drinks for my party?
A. At Academy Lanes we have a full menu for you to order from. Due to the fact that we have a menu, we do not allow outside food or beverages. We do however allow birthday parties to bring in a cake.
Q. Are you licensed to serve alcohol?
A. Yes, we do have a liquor license. Due to the fact that we do have a liquor license, we do not allow any outside beverages. We ask that prizes and presents that contain liquor be presented at a different location.
Q. How many people can Academy Lanes hold?
A. Our capacity at Academy Lanes is 300 people.
Q. Will the bill for my party automatically include gratuities?
A. No it will not, you can talk to the counter staff to add gratuities to your bill at the time of payment.
Q. How many people can the Party Rooms hold?
A. Each party room has seating for up to 20 people. We can open up the wall between two of the party rooms to create one large room that can accommodate up to 40 people.
Q. Do I need to make a deposit?
A. We ask for deposits on reservations of 4 lanes or more. Depending on the number of lanes and length of time you are booking, the deposits range from $50 to $1000.
Q. Is the deposit refundable?
A. When you pay for your lanes, we usually just subtract the deposit from your total bill. In the event of a cancellation, we require Two Weeks Notice in order to refund your full deposit.
Q. When should I arrive for my party?
A. We suggest you arrive about 15 Minutes before your party. This gives you time to make up your teams, get shoes and clear up any details that need to be taken care of.
